Why wheat?

The feedstock of choice in Europe is Wheat as it has been a surplus crop in Europe in recent years and it is readily available.

Human food supply is not impacted, it stores well and is amenable to both wet and dry milling.

It grows (and is grown) in most of Europe and consequently distances from feedstock to facility are relatively short assisting with establishing a low carbon footprint.

For many years the UK has had a surplus of feed wheat despite EU Agricultural Policy targeted at constraining its production in order to reduce stocks. Europe should therefore have the capacity to grow more wheat to meet demand.

The RTFO has provisions that seek a “chain of custody” for biofuels in which the sustainability of supply and the carbon footprint from growing feedstock, fertilisers, harvesting, processing and transportation is measured. Consequently, sourcing home grown wheat can score a better carbon footprint than Brazilian imports.

Wheat is available, in surplus, can be sourced locally, is sustainable, does not disrupt the food/fuel balance at the currently legislated levels of blending. Wheat is already used by many European plants already operating.

The industrial technology to use is proven. It should, with the aid of intelligent plant design, score better carbon reduction than imported Bioethanol.
